Mise en scene

 What's up bloggers! Today we are going over Mis en scene. Mis en scene, refers to the arrangement of visual elements in a scene, encompassing everything from set design and lighting to costume choices and actor's movements. It is a directors way of visually telling the story and creating a specific atmosphere or mood. Today, I am going to do an analysis on my favorite show Snowfall. 

Firstly, two of the most notable mis en scene features in this "Snowfall scene" are the lighting and everyone's solemn looks. Strong feelings are conveyed by their somber expressions, and the tension in this moment is increased by the subdued lighting. Not only does lowkey lighting create a dramatic atmosphere via its purposeful use of shadows and contrasts, but it also suggests the nature of an impending drug sale. The warehouse where they are located is often the scene of large-scale drug transactions. Warehouses often host large operations since they are restricted spaces. 

Second, the attire and haircuts of the characters enhance the mise en scene. The 1980s are meant to be the setting for this show. That's further enhanced by the haircut here. When you see Leon in the white, his hairdo of cornrows is rather typical in the modern day. It's also noticeable that Leon is wearing a pager, even though we no longer use them. We can merely use our phone to make phone calls. Jerome is also visible; he has the curly fro, which was a very common hairdo in the 1980s. As you can see from the outfit, Jerome is wearing a flannel, which was the standard 1980s daily wear. 

In this scene, You can see that Franklin has gone down the wrong path and he is clearly struggling. The clothing he is wearing is all ripped up and it is clearly dirty. You can see that his clothes hasn't been washed in a while. In his facial expressions you can see that he is clearly stressed out. His hair doesn't seem groomed at all. Throughout the show Franklin beard barley showed. Now in this scene his beard is fully grown out. In the background you can see Leon, the difference in appearances show you that Franklin is currently not doing well. In the back Leon clothing looks like it has been washed, Leon clothes aren't dirty and he Leon just looks clean overall. Lastly, Leon is usually with Franklin almost all the time when they are on scene together, but thus time, Leon is in the back just watching Franklin leave.

In this scene is snowfall, you can see that Louie and Jerome are starting to become really successful couple. In this scene, there is a lot a highway lighting and I feel like is to show how wealthy these two are. Jerome is wear a nice leather jacket and he is wearing a lot of jewelry. He is wearing a lot of rings around his fingers, and. he is wearing a really nice gold chain. From louie, she is wearing a nice dress, she is also wearing a nice necklace. In the background, you can see multiple trophy case and the entire area looks like they are living a pretty wealthy life. 

In this scene, you can tell that Jerome and Louie are getting married at their wedding. You can see from their emotions you can see that everyone is really happy. Louie in this scene, is flashing her wedding ring showing everyone that she is finally a married women. She is also wearing a white long dress, and usually that associates with a wedding dress. The use of natural light in this scene brings out a happy mood and it makes everyone happy for the both of them.
